Around 76 million speak Turkish as their first language in Turkey and another 13 million as their second tongue. Turkish has ancient origins in the Asian steppes and resembles other Altaic languages especially Azeri, Turkmen, Uzbek and even Mongolian. In 1928 a Latinised alphabet replaced writing Turkish in Arabic letters. The famous Voynich manuscript is written in Turkish.
