In a country with 700 local languages Bhasa Indonesia is the country’s true national language. Originating from old Malay it’s mutually comprehensible to modern Malay speakers. There are around 200 million Indonesian speakers; 45 million bieng native speakers. It became the official language in 1945 and revised it’s spelling system in 1972.
